I rarely eat out in Ann Arbor, and I'm glad I got to try Cafe Zola. The high point is the food. Interesting menu, with a lot of delicious combinations and ideas. I ordered Heidi's Breakfast, which was a glorified bagel sandwich with eggs, shredded sweet potatoes, chives, asparagus, cheese and more. It was extremely tasty.
The atmosphere is nice, kind of bustling, and crowded but not uncomfortable. The food and speciality beverages are expensive. I'm not sure where they get their ingredients, but for what they charge I expect that they are local and fresh as hell. I'm tempted to say it's overpriced.
The service was on the slow side and the servers were kind of aloof.
The Woodbridge Pub is extremely nicely renovated. So much so, that I feared for the big glass windows that face Trumbull. I picture bullet holes, rocks or even a car crashing through them in the next five years. I hope I'm wrong. At least I could keep an eye on my car from the table due to the large windows.
I had dinner there on a Friday night. The service was a bit slow and shaky, but forgivable considering they haven't been open long.
The worst part was the noise. I couldn't hear the person across the tiny table from me unless I shouted. We had to repeat just about everything we said to each other. It was nearly unbearable.
The BBLT is amazing. The pizza was pretty good, too, good enough to take home the unfinished portion and eat later on. My favorite was the tiny (and cheap!) cucumber, tomato and mozzarella salad. Yum.
I'd probably hit this place up for lunch, but it's too noisy for a nice dinner for two.
I was very excited when I heard there would be another place to get sushi in downtown Detroit. I am a regular customer of Fishbone's in Greektown (I love their specialty sushi rolls). Sometimes I visit Oslo, but it's often empty and I find it to be over priced. I also like Sala Thai for carry out.
Wasabi's sushi is fresh, quick and cheap! The combo I ordered cost less than $9 and included three rolls (six pieces each), miso soup and a cucumber salad. My friend got a sushi combo that was about $12 and that came with a California roll, soup, salad, shrimp dumplings, three pieces of nigiri AND fresh fruit.
I don't think Wasabi serves alcohol (yet?), which is a deal breaker for me at dinner time, but this will probably become my favorite new lunchtime spot. I had heard from others that the service can be slow, but I went on a Thursday around 1 p.m. and I was in and out in less than an hour.
TIP: The address says 15 E. Kirby, but there is an entrance right on Woodward at the corner of Kirby.
The service can be a nightmare, and it can be quite expensive ($3.99 for sliced pineapple?). The best thing about Au Bon Pain is the variety. It's also fresh and healthy if you choose wisely.
I've given Nami the benefit of the doubt too many times. I can't keep going back to see if the experience ever gets better. It doesn't. This is the most overpriced sushi restaurant I've ever been to. For the price you pay, you get half the food that you would get at nicer restaurants. Also, the menu isn't really that inventive. The fish is fresh and it has a great location. Those are Nami's only to "pros" in my experiences.
Cafe Sushi is my favorite non-Detroit sushi restaurant. The service is always top notch (fast!) and the selections are familiar yet intersting enough to be wowed. Cafe Sushi's max roll is in my top five favorite dishes ever served in a restaurant. It's basically a California roll smothered in a spicy sauce and sauteed conch shell meat and onions. Add some edamame and a spicy shrimp crunch roll and you have a near-perfect sushi dinner in a comfortable atmosphere for under $25.
Fishbone's is hands-down my favorite restaurant in Detroit. I'm a sushi freak, and sushi freaks are notoriously picky and snobbish about where to get sushi. I know Oslo is considered the preferred spot to get sushi downtown, but I have to wholeheartedly disagree. Fishbone's has a comfortable atmosphere, affordable prices, good service (most of the time) and it's attached to a casino! The sushi is fresh, inventive, and you get what you pay for. Oh yeah, they have other food like steaks, gumbo, alligator, etc. Whatever...more sushi please!
