Having married into a great Polish family, I have had the unique pleasure of tasting great Polish food and experience their traditions along with a bit of the home country language. Polish food is simple food, and some of the most satisfying comfort food in the world. Some would say that it lacks the influence of the aristocracy and is more attuned to the simple peasant fair and for that is what makes it so special. Like in many cultures, Polish food encompasses locally grown or raised food sources and nothing goes to waste. Traditionally, much of the Polish cuisine, some may say, lacks the complexity of seasonings and sauces found in foods from other parts of the world. Perhaps as a general rule this may be true. What is embraced is a reliance on the basic flavors afforded from the meats and vegetables used in the offerings. Two Sisters offers all of that and more.
Stepping in the front door, you will first notice there will not be tables adorned with white cloth and flowers. Simple seating of booths and tables are the décor of the day but after all, you are here for the food and great food you will enjoy.
We were seated by a very pleasant hostess and started to check out the menu. At first glance there are a long list of traditional favorites, veal cutlet, cabbage rolls (golabki), kielbasa, cucumbers in sour cream dressing (mizeria) and, everyone’s favorite and must-have pierogis, offered stuffed with either potato, sauerkraut, or cheese. Slices of bread arrive curiously in a zip-lock bag. Ok, a bit different, but no question that it is fresh.
This is not my first time eating here and having sampled much of the menu, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed. Today it is cold and rainy and I am in the mood for perhaps the best chicken and dumpling soup in the world and it resides right here. This soup is so good that if eaten regularly could be the traditional vaccine for the common cold. It arrives piping hot from the kitchen in a bowl large enough for two. No, I don’t share. Golden colored, rich in aromatics, creamy textured broth with lots and lots of the most incredible handmade dumplings this side of Krakow. There is plenty of chicken and veggies but again the dumplings are the stars of the show. Don’t bring this to Mom’s if you were hoping for a copious Christmas.
Another “don’t miss soup”, only offered on Sundays, is a traditional sweet sour soup called Czarnina. I think you will find it to be very interesting and will be another favorite.
Two Sisters is a must visit with great value and some of the best Polish food you will ever get your spoon on.
