Detroit News Restaurant Critic Molly Abraham: The restaurant at Inn at St. John's, a conference center and hotel, offers an eclectic American menu in the hands of chef Tom Mackinnon, for many years the proprietor of Mackinnon's in Northville. He has written an imaginative list of such dishes as grilled Piedmontese tenderloin teamed with braised duck, crab-stuffed rock lobster tail, smoked and grilled salmon and lamb chops with lingonberry sauce. The lobster claw bisque, one of several soups, is outstanding, with a deeper, more pungent flavor than the usual delicate style of the dish. Everything from the numerous salad dressings, fresh mozzarella and bread to the Danish pastries is made in-house.

Chef Tom Mackinnon's recorded phone message isn't one of those mumbled I'll-call-you-back lines. The ebullience in his voice comes through loud and clear as he says "Greetings from the new Inn at St. John's. This is executive chef Tom Mackinnon, and I'm probably in the kitchen right now."
