Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) lives in small-town Texas and yearns to break free of her mother's (Marcia Gay Harden) world of beauty pageants and conformity. She sees her chance when she meets the Hurl Scouts, a roller-derby team; she tries out for the team and wins a slot, lying to her parents about her new hobby. Bliss finds friendship and freedom with her teammates, but a conflict between a championship game and the Bluebonnet beauty pageant threatens to spill her secret.

Whip It! is sort of a throwback to the good old days when you used to go to the movies just to be entertained and have a good time. It's pure escapism! My wife, daughter and I went to a sneak preview last Saturday. The theater was sold out and the audience ranged from teens to senior citizens. Everybody seemed to have a great time as there are laughs galore and touching moments also. The ensemble cast is terrific; especially Ellen Page and Marcia Gay Harden, who plays her mom. The main plotline revolves around their differences. The roller derby scenes, which were filmed in Detroit, are action-packed and authentic, with the actresses doing their own stunts and showing their bruises to prove it. Bottom line: We can't remember the last time we had that good of a time at the movies! Everyone left with a smile on their faces. Brava, Drew Barrymore!

"Whip It" looks like it was a fun movie to make. Unfortunately, it's not all that fun to watch. (Full review)
